### REDUCE THE AMOUNT
OF INCIDENCES OF ROAD
TRAUMA AND CRASHES

#### Towards Zero.
Our goal is zero fatal and serious injury crashes in the
Mid & South Canterbury region.

__

Mid & South Canterbury Road Safety ( MSCRS ) is tasked with promoting road
safety and educating the community on. safer road use. It is our aim to reduce
the amount of incidences of road trauma and crashes throughout Mid & South
Canterbury. We work closely with other road safety partners, like Police,
Engineers, MoT, AA, and ACC to achieve this goal.

This work is carried out by the Mid & South Canterbury Road Safety
Coordinators (RSCs) . The primary responsibility of this position is to
coordinate the efforts of key road safety organisations and community groups
throughout the District. There is no charge for this service.

The role of RSCs has evolved rapidly over the past decade. Coordinators now
have an integral role in reducing road trauma in New Zealand and are appointed
to coordinate , facilitate and manage local efforts to reduce identified road
safety issues in their areas. Community involvement is an essential component
in achieving our road safety targets.

## DRIVING ON RURAL ROADS

Gravel roads are still common. The more frequently used ones are graded
regularly, but in rainy weather they can get ruts, corrugations and potholes
very quickly.

__

## FATIGUE

Fatigue is tiredness, weariness or exhaustion. You can be fatigued enough for
it to impair your driving long before you ‘nod off’ at the wheel – which is an
extreme form of fatigue.

__

## INTERSECTIONS

Intersections can include entrances to and exits from supermarkets, petrol
stations and other public parking areas, such as airports and hospitals. There
are a number of different types of intersections, depending on how many roads
meet at the intersection.

__

## BUYING A CAR

Find out the safety rating of your vehicle, or one you\'re looking to buy.

__

## WINTER DRIVING

Allow greater following distances on frosty and wet days.

__

## HOW SAFE IS YOUR CAR?

Your vehicle plays a major role in keeping you safe on the road. Safety
ratings are the best way to know how well your vehicle will perform in a
crash.

WINTER DRIVING TIPS FOR NZ ROADS __

##### TIPS & INFORMATION FOR ALL AGES.
NEW DRIVERS TO EXPERIENCED.

* __

Always check the weather forecast and road conditions before you leave.

* __

If travelling long distances, make sure you are well rested and plan where to
have a break.

* __

Ensure your car is roadworthy and keep at least half a tank of fuel in your
vehicle in case you get diverted onto another route or you are forced to turn
back.

* __

Anything that diverts a driver\'s attention for more than two seconds can
significantly increase the likelihood of a crash or near-crash.

* __

Make sure your car\'s windscreen and mirrors are clean and adjust all of the
controls (including radio/stereo) before setting off, or pull over safely to
do so.

* __

Do Not Disturb While Driving mode – If you can’t resist the temptation to use
your phone while driving then his feature is available for Apple and Android
users. When Do Not Disturb While Driving is activated, it helps you stay
focused on the road.

* __

In 2019, fatigue was a contributing factor in 17 fatal crashes (6 per cent of
all fatal crashes), 85 (4 per cent) serious injury crashes and 491 (5 per
cent) minor injury crashes.

* __

Speed and fatigue are also a bad combination. The faster you drive, the less
time you have to react to the unexpected. When you’re tired, fatigue slows
your reactions.
